Pointing Toward Heaven

From 1952 to 1972, the world saw more technology develop at an increasing rate. Jet airplanes traveled faster than the speed of sound, guided missiles lead to the Apollo space mission, and soon after the space mission, man walked on the moon. Automatic computers analyzing incredible amounts of data became available in homes and schools. Why even television and Polaroid cameras marketed color film
While the world was pointing toward space, Liberty was pointing toward Heaven. In this span of 20 years, we see her ministries reaching out in new dimensions.
Liberty’s mission support increased tremendously. The church put the Cooperative Program on a percentage basis. The Baptist radio program invited us to participate.
Sunday School campaigns were conducted and the church improved her building accommodations to meet the needs our public worship required.
In 1966 Liberty voted to purchase 26 pews and new sanctuary furniture. Air conditioning and heating units were also installed. The church constructed a brick sign to be placed near the crossroads inviting all to come and worship.
In February of 1970 Percy Davidson was called to lead the church music ministry on a volunteer basis. Since that time, the church has enriched its music ministry. Many gifted people have added new dimensions of praise to our worship through Gospel singing.
John White, who is now in school at Southwestern Baptist Theological Seminary, used his talent on a volunteer basis to aid the music ministry. Dallas McCarley has also served as the Choir Director and often times lead church music. Today, Percy Davidson is in charge of both church music and the choir.
In April of 1971 Liberty began to point her youth ministry in the right direction. J. W. and Wanda Nunnery were called to serve as Youth Directors on a volunteer basis. They sacrificed much time and service for the spiritual advancement of our youth. For almost nine years they continued to respond to the growing needs of our young people. By 1982 Butch and Martha Gray were called to take the responsibility of Youth Leaders, also on a volunteer basis. They, too, have devoted time and service to the spiritual advancement of our young people.
In March of 910 a symbol of Liberty’s message was placed upon her roof. A beautiful 24-foot steeple was installed.
By day, the steeple appears to pierce the heavens as to direct us to our source of life. By dusk, the sun casts a shadow of the cross to remind us of the price He paid for our church. By night, the lighted steeple shines as Christ would say to those in darkness, “I am the Light of the world.”
I well remember my first glimpse of Liberty. It was her steeple that caught my eye. My, what a grand sight it was – especially when I was 20 minutes late for my first opportunity to preach at Liberty!
